Why we use creatinine level to measure the kidney damage condition

Creatinine is filterated by glomerular, and discharged out of body through urine. If kidney is damaged, creatinine won’t discharged out of body, it will enter into the blood, which is the reason of high serum creatinine level. Because kidney has strong compensation ability, slight damage will not cause to elevation of serum creatinine. So when your serum creatinine level goes up, it means that your kidney has been damaged seriously.

Serum creatinine and BUN is two important index for patients with kidney disease. If both of them are over than normal level, it will be kidney failure. BUN is metabolic product of protein, its elevation shows that your creatinine level has been damaged.
